My Christmas with Quorn - hints and tips.

Christmas bauble by Darwin BellMy Christmas Day with Quorn is fortunately not a solitary one, my husband and I are vegetarian and my mum will go along with whatever we take to cook at her place. But it’s supposed to be a treat for everyone, so I make sure I’ve got a traditional meat eater’s Christmas dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ (if someone else cooks it).  At 84 she’s not going to change, and she enjoys it. So that’s the easy bit.  We’ve been vegetarian for nearly 40 years, and the Christmas catering is always a challenge even though there’s only just the two of us.

So to feel traditional, there are Quorn banger rolls with lovely flaky pastry … I’m no martyr so I use pre-rolled frozen pastry!  Then sweet mincemeat tarts with cream and brandy butter, and Christmas pudding flamed with vodka because it flames better.  I make a rich savoury dish with chestnuts, porcini (fresh), Quorn Paté and Madeira wine in a choux paste ring (a gougère).  Then to make my Boxing Day complete, I make a curry using Quorn chicken-style pieces.  Ahh. Just like the old meat eating days. . And then it’s all over for another year.

To keep Christmas special give everyone their own type of Christmas and don’t over-eat, you’ll only regret it, you know you will!

And what about giving to a charity instead of over-eating ourselves dizzy?  Whatever you do, don’t let Christmas become a banality.  Make sure all the right things count towards making it the special time it should be.

I’d love to hear what the rest of you are doing for your Christmas meals?  Tips and recipe inspiration always welcome.  Be sure to leave your comments here.
